Background Information:
Comin’ Home, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides transitional housing to homeless veterans merged into CODAC Behavioral Health Services, a leading nonprofit that provides prevention and treatment services for mental health, addiction and trauma.

In 2010, several Comin’ Home grants were suspended, including one with its largest funder, the Veterans Administration. This put the organization in significant financial hardship.

With ever-increasing numbers of veterans returning to Tucson from combat, CODAC recognized a continued need for Comin’ Home services in our community. CODAC began offering additional support and services including clinical management, facility repairs and administrative assistance.

Within months, VA grants were reinstated. In January, 2012, Comin’ Home staff were formally hired by CODAC and began operating using CODAC’s accredited policies and procedures.

Now a program of CODAC Behavioral Health Services, Comin’ Home has housing units available for 52 individuals and provides up to 24 months of transitional housing assistance. Additionally, it connects Veterans to medical and behavioral health services, community support, educational and life skills resources, job assessment and training and a healthy community. Funding is made available through the Veterans Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and private donations.

“We are happy that CODAC was able to step in and help us preserve this program that has been around for more than 20 years in the service of veterans,” says Pat Marsh, past Comin’ Home Board President.

“According to the National Council of Homeless Veterans, 1.4 million veterans are considered at risk for homelessness,” says Dennis Regnier, MA, President & CEO of CODAC Behavioral Health Services. “What veterans need is secure, safe and clean housing that offers a supportive environment free of drugs and alcohol. And that’s what we provide at Comin’ Home. We’re so pleased that Comin’ Home is now one of the many outstanding programs we can offer to our Arizona community.”

Nonprofit Veterans Organization, Comin’ Home, Merges with CODAC Behavioral Health Services

February 1st, 2013

Comin’ Home, a Tucson 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides transitional housing to homeless veterans, has merged with CODAC Behavioral Health Services, a leading nonprofit that provides prevention and treatment services for mental health, addiction and trauma. The merger is effective today.

In 2009/2010, Comin’ Home had management issues resulting in several grants being suspended, including one with its largest funder, the Veterans Administration (VA).  This put the organization in significant financial hardship, unable to pay its bills and sustain the program.

With ever-increasing numbers of veterans returning to Tucson from combat, CODAC recognized a continued need for Comin’ Home’s services in our community. CODAC began offering additional support and services including clinical management, facility repairs and administrative assistance.

Within months, the VA grants were reinstated.  In January, 2012, Comin’ Home staff were formally hired by CODAC and began operating using CODAC’s accredited policies and procedures, and with CODAC employee benefits.

Outside of Office at Comin' HomeComin’ Home was established in 1989 and has since served more than 3,800 homeless men and women veterans in our community who have been unable to find employment and housing.

Now a program of CODAC Behavioral Health Services, Comin’ Home has housing units available for 52 individuals and provides up to 24 months of housing assistance. Additionally, it connects veterans to medical and behavioral health services, community support, educational and life skills resources, job assessment and training, financial benefits and – perhaps most significantly – a healthy community.  Funding is made available through the Veterans Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and private donations.

“We are happy that CODAC was available to step in and help us and preserve this program that’s been around for more than 20 years in the service of Veterans,” says Pat Marsh, Comin’ Home Board President.

“According to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans, 1.4 million veterans are considered at risk for homelessness,” says Dennis Regnier, President & CEO of CODAC. “What veterans need is secure, safe, clean housing that offers a supportive environment free of drugs and alcohol. And that’s what we provide at Comin’ Home. We’re so pleased that Comin’ Home is now one of the many outstanding programs we can offer to our Arizona community.”

For more information on Comin’ Home, call Sarah Taouil, Program Coordinator, at (520) 322-6980. For more information about this press release, contact Kristine Welter Hall, Vice President for Marketing and Development, at kwelter@codac.org or (520) 202-1746.

Founded in 1970, CODAC Behavioral Health Services is one of Arizona’s oldest and most respected providers of behavioral health and family development services.  Through 12 service locations, more than 325 staff and numerous housing programs, CODAC serves more than 12,000 individuals and families annually.

Annual Point in Time Street Count

January 8th, 2013

Homeless Person

Every year, nearly 250 volunteers scour the streets of Pima County with the goal of providing an adequate count of homeless individuals in the county. This count provides important information regarding the number of homeless people in the area as well insight into what resources they may require.

The results of this critical count greatly influences the amount of federal funding that Pima County receives. According to the Tucson Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) contributes approximately $8.6 million annually towards homeless services in our community.

The count will take place in Pima County on Wednesday, February 27th with volunteer training taking place on Monday, February 25th.  Volunteers will administer surveys to homeless individuals. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, click here.

CODAC Selected for National Initiative to Improve Access to Mental Health and Addiction Treatment

August 8th, 2012

CODAC is one of seven Arizona organizations selected by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare to be a part of the 2012 Same Day Access Initiative. Only 56 organizations were selected nationwide.

This 12-month initiative is primarily funded by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare in an effort to significantly increase savings, reduce staff time, cut wait times and strengthen patient engagement in community behavioral health settings across several states.  Participants will assess and redesign intake and assessment processes to reduce client wait times. Improved access to care has been proven to reduce no-shows and cancellations as well.

Locally, the initiative has the potential to create system efficiencies that will help all behavioral health providers inArizona.

For individuals struggling with mental illness and/or addiction disorders, the ability to get seen immediately by a behavioral health professional can be critical.

“We are so pleased to have been selected for this initiative,” says Dennis Regnier, CODAC President and CEO. “We will receive absolute top-notch and invaluable consulting from MTM Management Services, leading national consultants on this topic. This is an outstanding opportunity to truly improve care for our community, state and nation.”

The Arizona Council of Human Service Providers will lead the sevenArizonaorganizations:Arizona’s Children Association, CODAC, Community Intervention Associates, La FronteraArizona, Southwest Behavioral Health Services, Touchstone Behavioral Health and West Yavapai Guidance Clinic.  The initiative kicked off August 1, 2012.

Attention Non-Title 19 Members with SMI

July 31st, 2012

IMPORTANT: Non-Title 19 SMI members now have access to more mental health care benefits. Please Visit Your Site/Program Immediately!

Due to an increase in state funding, CODAC is now able to provide more covered services to individuals with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) who are not eligible for AHCCCS (Arizona’s Medicaid system).

The additional covered services focus on helping members improve their quality of life, supporting goals of skill-building, self-management, employment, peer and family support and more.

In addition to medications and appointments with prescribing physicians, qualifying members may now have access to a variety of peer support and recovery services as well as an updated medication formulary.

What to Do Next:
If you are a CODAC member with Serious Mental Illness who does not qualify for AHCCCS (“Non-Title 19″), it is important that you meet with CODAC staff to discuss your options and plan out your next steps in your recovery plan … even if it doesn’t change much at all! Our goal is to meet with all “Non-Title 19″ members with a serious mental illness before September 1, 2012.

Please go to your treatment site or program as soon as possible. Check in the front desk, and the staff person will assist you. Also, please bring this letter with you to help expedite the process.
