Celebrating Pride Month

As we welcome June, we are excited to celebrate Pride Month and honor the diversity, identities, and health of our LGBTQ+ community. This month is a time to recognize the unique challenges and triumphs faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and to reaffirm our commitment to providing inclusive and supportive care.

Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a pivotal event that sparked the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. The first pride marches were held in June 1970, marking a pivotal moment for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. This month serves as a reminder that the movement for equality continues today.

Health disparities among the LGBTQ+ population often begin at a young age. LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to face bullying, sexual assault, depression and substance misuse. Trauma, stigma, prejudice and systemic discrimination are significant social determinants of health that negatively impact health outcomes. Additionally, this community is more likely to experience poverty, with transgender individuals facing significantly higher rates of homelessness.

At CODAC, we believe in fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. We are dedicated to supporting the diverse identities of our members and staff, ensuring that our services are accessible and affirming for all. Throughout Pride Month, we encourage you to participate in activities and discussions that promote understanding and acceptance.
