The Power of Art and Mindfulness During the Holidays
As the days grow shorter and the holiday season approaches, many individuals face increased emotional challenges. At CODAC Health, Recovery & Wellness, art and mindfulness are more than just activities — they’re powerful tools for healing.
CODAC offers several art focused wellness groups, which include painting, clay work, collage and seasonal projects. The groups offer clients a safe space to explore emotions, reduce stress and build community.
These creative outlets are especially impactful during the fall and winter months, when feelings of isolation, grief and anxiety often intensify.
For CODAC member Marty D., creating art helps him manage symptoms of anxiety.
“I feel focused and calm when I am painting. I can go to a place in my mind where I feel happy,” he shares.
Why Art Supports Mental Health
Art supports recovery and mental health by engaging brain systems tied to emotion, memory, and focus. According to Psychology Today, creating or observing art can soothe anxiety, help process trauma and foster emotional connection; especially for those experiencing depression or stress.
“Art allows people to express what words can’t,” says Bre Moreno, BHT, recovery coach at CODAC. “Whether someone is navigating recovery, coping with loss or simply seeking peace, creative expression can be an incredibly grounding support.”
In addition to visual arts, CODAC integrates mindfulness practices into its programming, helping clients stay grounded and present. These tools support emotional regulation and resilience.
“We believe healing happens in many forms. By combining art, mindfulness and the clinical support offered at CODAC, we’re helping people reconnect with themselves and others,” says Moreno.
